Our faith

The faith of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church

Tewahedo—‘made one’—expresses the inseparable unity of Christ’s divinity and humanity.

The Creed

We confess one God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit; Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, who became human for our salvation, was crucified, rose from the dead and will come again in glory.

Foundations

Holy Scripture

The written Word of God is proclaimed, studied and lived in the Church.

Apostolic tradition

The received faith is handed down through worship, teaching and the life of the Church.

Five mysteries

Trinity, Incarnation, Baptism, Holy Communion and Resurrection of the Dead.

Seven sacraments

Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Communion, Ordination, Matrimony, Penance and Unction of the Sick.

Worship and tradition

The Divine Liturgy is the heart of worship. Scripture, prayer, sacred chant, fasting, incense, icons and the Holy Eucharist shape the life of the faithful.
